Castle of the French Fountain

21610, Fontaine-Française
  • Visitable

The garden of the Château de Fontaine-Française has been spared by transformations or abusive restorations and is today in a state close to its creation between 1750 and 1762. Nested in the urban fabric of the village, the castle and its garden are closed walls, with the exception of the 7-hectare pond protected by a simple border and opening the gardens of 2.8 hectares on the scale of the landscape. The gardens consist of flowerbeds to the west and east of the central body of the castle (consisting of simple lawn, punctuated with yew topiary and statues). On either side of the north-south alley lined with quills of lime trees carved arcades, groves surround the flowerbeds to the north and south. The east-west slope of the land is treated by a grassed embankment. An engraved north-south alley separates the pond from the gardens.
