Château de Meillant
18200, Meillant

History
Fleuron du Berry, Meillant Castle is the culmination of the flamboyant Gothic style.
Many owners have succeeded since Charles de Chaumont d'Amboise, governor of Italy, transformed it from 1473. The castle was preserved during the Revolution, the population of Meillant and the surrounding area having mobilized to defend the owner of the time, the Duke of Charost, creator of the Berry Canal.
It was then transmitted by inheritance to the Rochechouart family of Mortemart, one of the oldest in France, which still occupies it today.
For the anecdote, Madame de Montespan, Louis XIV's favorite, was a Mortemart.
Meillant offers a rich and fun program of visits to discover the different families who lived there, their way of life and the great architectural styles of our country.
