« Château de Montgobert estate of the family Suchet duke of Albufera »

Introduction

Built in the eighteenth century, the Castle belonged to Pauline Bonaparte, wife of General Leclerc and sister of Napoleon 1st. The remains then returned to Marshal Davout and then to the Cambacérès and Suchet of Albufera families.

Today the Castle houses the wood Museum and of the local life with a collection of more than 300 tools divided into workshops.

The castle is surrounded by a park of the beginning of the nineteenth, picked up by Duchene, landscaping of gardens worth him - Vicomte.
He leads by a driveway in frontal perspective, the tomb of General Leclerc.

It dominates the village and the forest stands.
A place of memory of the first Empire on the edge of the forest of Retz.

History and famous characters

It was built at the end of the eighteenth century. The Castle Park was designed in the early 19th century and taken over by Achille Duchêne. In 1798, Victoire Emmanuel Leclerc became owner of this House. General of the armies, he married the young Pauline Bonaparte, sister of the Emperor Napoleon I. Over the years, he became the right-hand man of the latter, but died in the prime of life on an expedition to Saint-Domingue. Widow, Pauline married the Italian Prince Camille Borghèse and left little by little Montgobert.

The field spent some years later at the hands of the brothers and sisters of her first husband. Louis Nicolas Davout, husband of Louise Leclerc, was the sole owner of Montgobert from 1821. Just like his deceased brother-in-law, it was a grand officer of the Empire. Marshal raised to the rank of peer of France, a legend said that he had never been beaten... During the following decades, other characters from large families of the nobility of Empire lived in Montgobert. Raoul-Napoleon Suchet, Duke of Albufera or Anna Masséna here left their footprints. It belongs today to the Duke of Albufera and houses a Museum of wood and tool.
