The castle and gardens of Ballon, welcome you to visit the keep, fortress of the Middle Ages classified as a historical monument, and its remarkable garden of roses, peonies and other botanical collections.
From the top of the feudal mound built on a rocky outcrop, we discover an exceptional panoramic viewpoint more than 40 km from the Maine-Normandy Park and the Sôsnois country.
The Balloon Dungeon, nicknamed the Maine Gate, is one of the oldest military fortresses on the border of Maine and Normandy. The object of many clashes between the Anglo-Normans and the French, it remained a strategic point for nearly four centuries of William the Conqueror until the end of the Hundred Years War.
More recently, a walled garden of medieval inspiration was created by Jean Guéroult within the curtain walls. A botanical park including among others a rose garden, topiaries, fruit trees, collections of clematis and peonies surrounds the fortress.
