In the heart of Beaujolais, the castle, built in the 11th century, was a fortress surrounded by a quadrangular enclosure flanked by towers and with a drawbridge. It was destroyed in 1432 by the Burgundians.
Rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, it was transformed in the following century into a pleasure residence. He kept his square dungeon, a Gothic chapel, a courtyard with Renaissance style galleries.
It is surrounded by a park of 3 ha, home to a French garden, around which extend 90 ha of vineyards to the famous production, and faces a cuvage of the seventeenth century, one of the
larger areas of the region.
The castle today
The largest castle of Beaujolais was built between 1674 and 1676, presumably on
the plans of Jules Hardouin-Mansart for François de La Chaize of Aix, lieutenant of the king to
Beaujeu, on the site of a castle destroyed during a landslide. Consisting of three symmetrical buildings, including a central body surmounted by a triangular pediment, and with slate tile roofs, it has a very classic look. It opens onto a French garden, including flowerbeds and a kitchen garden with an original star layout. The castle is the center of a vineyard that produces a famous brouilly.
